British Home Secretary Suella Braverman is said to have tried to avoid her rage fine. The politician had asked government officials to arrange private further education for her, the Sunday Times reported. However, the initiative failed.
The incident is believed to have happened last year. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the 43-year-old has now paid the fine. “It is my understanding that she expressed her regret for the speeding, accepted the fine and paid the fine,” said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. However, he does not know the full details and has not spoken to Braverman. A government spokeswoman later added that he had confidence in the politician.
Opposition wants investigation
The opposition now wants the incident to be investigated. “The Prime Minister has promised integrity, professionalism and accountability, but it seems his Home Secretary is blatantly ignoring those three points,” said Yvette Cooper of the Labor Party. Sunak had appointed Braverman as Secretary of the Interior in the fall. She had resigned just days earlier – still under short-term Prime Minister Liz Truss – for forwarding an official document using her private email address, in violation of ministerial rules.
She is regarded as one of the leading right-wing forces in the Conservative Party. Braverman tried to avoid her outrageous fine in 2022, according to the Sunday Times report. To that end, she had contacted government employees—to no avail.
