At least 20 people have been killed in a fire in a high school dormitory in Guyana. There are several injured.
Guyana’s president, Irfaan Ali, spoke of a “major disaster”. In addition to an extensive rescue operation, he ordered special precautions to be taken in the two major hospitals in the capital Georgetown “so that every child receives the best possible care”.
Several private and military planes have been sent to Mahdia, which is about 200 kilometers south of Georgetown and is currently being hit by heavy rainfall.
Opposition politician Natasha Singh-Lewis called on the government to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire and issue a detailed report. “We must understand how this terrible and deadly incident happened and take all necessary measures to prevent such a tragedy from happening again,” she said.
As the government of the small South American country announced, a fire broke out on Sunday evening for initially unknown reasons at a secondary school in the mining town of Mahdia in the center of the country.
