The 86-year-old former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi does not want to give up the presidency of his party Forza Italia despite his serious illness.
“I feel better. It was tough, but I’ve always had faith. I counted on heavenly help and on the doctors,” said the party leader, who was released on Friday after 45 days of hospitalization. Berlusconi was admitted to San Raffaele hospital in early April. He spent twelve days in intensive care due to chronic leukemia and pneumonia. He was then treated in a normal ward.
“Must renew ourselves”
Yet he never stopped working, the conservative politician stressed to the newspaper “Corriere della Sera”. “The history of Forza Italia is one of continuous innovation. But to be credible, we must above all innovate,” said the 86-year-old, alluding to an upcoming restructuring.
Berlusconi’s party is part of the government
Berlusconi shaped Italian political life for decades. The right-wing populist and media entrepreneur was Prime Minister of Italy four times from 1994 to 2011 with interruptions. His party is also a member of the current governing coalition.
