Attack on Belgorod – Fighting in Russian border area continues

Date:

Fighting continues in several cities bordering Ukraine in Western Russia’s Belgorod region. “The defense ministry and other security structures are continuing to clear the territory,” Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Tuesday.

Fighting broke out in the Grayvoron district on the border with Ukraine on Monday. According to Gladkow, an “espionage and sabotage team” had entered the area. Two volunteer corps, made up of Russian citizens fighting on Kiev’s side in the war in Ukraine, have claimed responsibility for the attack. The goal is to create a demilitarized zone along the border to prevent continued shelling on Ukrainian territory, they said. Kiev denied any involvement in the action.

Almost all residents have fled
Most residents of the disputed area have fled. Eight people were injured, according to authorities. Gladkow announced in the morning that there were two more wounded residents in the disputed villages. However, so far the security forces have not been able to reach them to take care of them.

15 months into the war
Russia launched its offensive war against Ukraine 15 months ago and regularly shells cities and infrastructure in the neighboring country. In the meantime, however, Russian border regions are also complaining about increasing shelling from the Ukrainian side. The Belgorod incident is the most serious attack on Russian territory to date.
