Shopping is so expensive – comparison: Cheap groceries are almost gone

Date:

Groceries that were once considered cheap now cost a third more. The Chamber of Labor speaks of “scandalous price increases”.

It doesn’t always have to be the expensive tenderloin – if you had to watch your money, you used to buy cheaper goods. Tomatoes, pasta, bread did too. But a new price monitor from the Chamber of Commerce shows that cheap groceries are difficult to get. The prices for this have increased enormously in a year.

Summary of the Chamber of Commerce: “A shopping basket with the cheapest groceries and personal care products now costs a third more than a year ago.” Products such as sunflower oil, flour, butter, bread, pasta, tomatoes and shampoo were particularly affected. “In September 2021, consumers had to pay an average of 51.2 euros for the shopping basket with 40 products, in September 2022 that was already an average of 68.22 euros,” explains AK consumer lawyer Gabriele Zgubic. “The cheap products are often the stores’ own brands.”

Sunflower oil rose the most, with 163 percent more to be peeled, followed closely by flour (100 percent more) and tea butter (plus 77 percent). And: The tested supermarkets and discounters now charge the same amount for some foods, such as mineral water, canned beer, cola drinks, whole milk, tea butter, apricot jam, eggs, whole milk chocolate and table vinegar.
