The Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumption has explained that currently many tourist accommodations are acting “clandestinely” and “with impunity” due to the “lack of cooperation and transparency of the platforms with local authorities”.
He Basque government has asked in Brussels to tighten up the requirements of transparency and cooperation on the platforms of tourist rental. It was the Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumption of the Basque Government, Javier Hurtado, who defended that position in the European Commission and in the European Parliament.
Yesterday and today, the Basque minister had several meetings in the Community institutions with those responsible for the proposal for the “Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the collection and exchange of data related to short-term rentals”. The regulation will be discussed in a parliamentary committee this Tuesday and its vote is scheduled for September in the European Parliament, as the Basque government said in a note.
The director of Gasteiz believes that the new regulations “it will improve the control over the activities of houses and rooms for tourism use”, since its aim is to provide institutions – national, regional and local – with “tools to exchange data with online platforms that deal with this type of accommodation to work”.
The counselor explains that many tourist accommodations are currently trading “clandestine” and “with impunity” due to the “lack of cooperation and transparency of the platforms with local authorities”.
For this reason, he added, the regulation is “an opportunity that we should not miss to require the platforms to indicate the registration number of the houses,” he appreciates.
