The “whale”, an installation by the Italian artist Jacopo Allegrucci for the 24th International Triennale of Milan, was set on fire on Monday. The enormous blue whale of Paper Mache was made for the exhibition that was opened on 13 May. The arsonist was arrested, as the authorities said.
The installation symbolizes endangered species and is part of the “The Fragility of the Future” project of Allegrucci. The staff of the Triennale Milan immediately called the fire brigade. The alleged arsonist was identified and custody taken by officials of the Milan police.
The Triennale in Milan focuses on contemporary art, design, architecture, fashion and visual communication.
The Tuscan artist Jacopo Allegrucci is best known as the designer and construction manager of the huge cars in the famous carnival in Vireggio.
It combines traditional handicraft (paper mache, wood, metal) with modern mechanisms (hydraulic movements). His big figures often refer to literary or socially critical motives.
