Fortunately, bank robberies are rare – but in 2017 a Carinthian bank was robbed twice in a row. The perpetrators were caught after a lengthy investigation; one of the last to appear in court was a Bosnian who, as a 20-year-old, was involved in a coup d’état with loot of almost 185,000 euros.
Someone should argue that the Austrian judiciary cannot stand! It has been six years since the Raiffeisenbank in Schiefling am Wörthersee was attacked. The perpetrators acted extremely brutally: “They called robbery, safe, money and pressed the gun to the back of the employee’s head,” says prosecutor Tina Frimmel-Hesse. The main perpetrators were caught one by one and face up to seven years in prison; the youngest helper was sentenced on Tuesday by judge Uwe Dumpelnik as the last accomplice at the regional court in Klagenfurt.
The now 26-year-old had claimed he had only worked as a driver for a Bosnian car rental company – and had only “accidentally” driven the bank robbers and their loot of exactly €184,915.84. But no one fell for that: three years, partly calculated – a punishment he can probably live with, because it also means a chance for a new start for him. Since the escapee has been detained for almost a year, he will soon be released. And can finally hold his few months old baby in his arms for the first time, as the young father told the court with emotion.
