According to British secret services, the number of Russian deserters in the war against Ukraine has recently increased sharply. Between January and May, Russian military courts heard a total of 1,053 desertion cases, the British defense ministry said on Wednesday. That is more than in all of 2022.
Court records would indicate that most deserters would receive suspended sentences to be used again in the war, the British Ministry of Defense said.
Forced mobilization made the problems worse
“The Russian military has struggled to enforce discipline within its own ranks since the start of operations in Ukraine, but these problems have most likely worsened since the forced mobilization of reservists in October 2022,” it said in London.
Moscow accuses London of fake news
The British Ministry of Defense has published daily information on the course of the war since the beginning of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, citing intelligence information. With this, the British government wants to both counter the Russian image and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.
Kiev: €43,000 for each Russian deserter
In March, Ukraine offered Russian soldiers impunity and money if they surrender. Each soldier is offered the equivalent of about 43,000 euros. The campaign is funded by the international IT industry. “Whoever refuses to be an occupier brings peace closer. There will be no mercy for those who choose the path of the occupier,” Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said.
