The Pentecost weekend promises early summer weather and many will probably light their barbecue. For this reason, consumer protection groups of the Upper Austrian Labor Chamber have been scrutinizing marinated chicken. One sample had the bones splintered and complained of a disgusting odor.
The sample in question was not even tasted due to its “disgusting smell”.
Eight out of ten samples OK
The ready-to-eat seasoned poultry meat was purchased from several major supermarket chains in central Upper Austria and immediately subjected to sensory and microbiological testing. Eight out of ten samples were fine.
Smell and taste are not always perfect
There were complaints of minor odor or taste abnormalities in four and minor microbiological abnormalities in one, but this did not affect the overall rating – especially since the germ load determined was no longer significant after the meat had been thoroughly heated. The eight packs were therefore all classified as “perfect”.
“Grey-bluish discoloration of the flesh”
However, there were two serious complaints: a chicken grill plate had a “gray-bluish discoloration of the meat” and an “old, disgusting smell” that didn’t go away even after roasting. Therefore, a tasting was refused and the sample was classified as “unacceptable for human consumption”. In another cup, the testers found unclean, discolored pieces of flesh and bone splinters. It was rated disabled.
This is what experts advise
Experts advise to take poultry meat home quickly after purchase in a cooler bag and to store it in the coldest place in the refrigerator – that is the glass shelf above the vegetable compartment – and to keep it separate from other products. Care must be taken during processing to ensure that work is done properly and that the meat is cooked properly.
