In Halbenrain in the southeastern Styrian district, a farm caught fire on Tuesday afternoon. Eleven fire brigades fought the flames with 98 emergency services for hours. The cause of the fire was flash sleep, the police announced in a broadcast on Wednesday.
At exactly 4:39 p.m., after lightning struck during a thunderstorm on a farm in Halbenrain, the volunteer fire brigade was alerted by a siren. The roof structure of the building in which the hay was stored was already completely engulfed when they arrived.
The extinguishing water supply had to be built up from a stream and a pond, but the fire was quickly under control. The glowing hay in the attic had to be removed by the fire brigade. A truck crane from a construction company was also used. Only at 22:23 “fire out” could be given.
According to the police, the lightning strike also destroyed the entire electrical installation of the residential building located there. Minor damage was also caused to the neighboring building. The extent of the damage could not be quantified.
