At the Schöpfwerk in Vienna-Meidling, the residents of the large community building avoid the cellars and stairwells. The reason for this is acts of vandalism and aggressive youths.
Young gangs had been committing mischief in the community building at the Schöpfwerk for some time. “I haven’t dared to go into the basement for years,” says Elfriede P. Because young people party there and use drugs. But that’s not all: cellar compartments have already been broken into, including front doors and mailboxes. The lighting is also regularly destroyed or painted over with black paint.
“Even light switches are broken,” complains Günther C., who has lived here for 40 years.
“They spray graffiti on the house walls and break open the installation rooms”, C. is stunned. When it’s cold outside, the young people like to hang out in strange stairwells, where they sometimes order a pizza. In the summer it would be noisy late into the night. “When you talk to them about it, they just respond with insults and threats,” says C.
No outside help
And: “I called Wiener Wohnen countless times or wrote emails, nothing happened.” The police were not helpful either.
reporting crimes
According to a spokesman, Wiener Wohnen is aware of the problem. “We are working closely with the police to track down the perpetrators,” he says. In addition, locks and access codes would be exchanged regularly. He calls on residents to report the incident.
