Shock for many Viennese drivers! On Thursday morning they were informed via flyers about a parking sticker lottery in the city. But the winners are in for a nasty surprise.
The “Wiener Auto-Los” is a pilot project of the city of Vienna. But the winners do not receive a free parking sticker, on the contrary. The aim of the project is to reduce the motorization level in the city to 250 passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants by 2030. Hence the alleged action of the city: “If this reduction target is not met through natural development, lots will be drawn monthly for a small number of vehicles for which the parking sticker is no longer extended when it expires. There are of course exceptions for vehicle owners who need a parking space in the immediate vicinity of their place of residence for health reasons.”
441 picks per month
It also says: “The biggest lever to accelerate the reduction in the number of passenger cars is the abolition of the resident parking sticker. In a first pilot test from May 2023, the city will designate 441 cars each month that have a parking vignette in a lottery process. With these cars, the parking vignette will not be extended afterwards.”
Councilor denies
Alderman for transport Ulli Sima will provide information about the campaign at a later date via a press conference, it was initially said. But she knows nothing about it. “Of course, that’s not ours,” says her office’s “Krone” request. For the time being, no one has to worry about his parking sticker.
