The second round of the elections for the Turkish presidency saw a new record turnout among foreign voters in Austria. As the Turkish embassy announced on Thursday evening, a total of 67,726 votes have been counted. This corresponds to a turnout of 60.47 percent of the 112,000 eligible voters or 4.3 percentage points more than in the first round of voting. At that time, 62,349 of the 111,000 voters exercised their right to vote.
The incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan narrowly missed his re-election in the first round and has to go to a second round for the first time. Because he just missed the absolute majority, Erdogan is the big favorite in the race with opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
High popularity for Erdogan in Austria
Voters from abroad are seen as Erdogan’s traditional mainstay. In the first round of voting, the president received 57.7 percent of the vote. In Austria, 72 percent of voters even voted for him, which was a particularly strong value in an international comparison.
Results only after elections in Turkey on Sunday
In Austria, voting was possible from Saturday to Wednesday. As with the first round of voting, this was possible not only in the three general consulates in Vienna, Salzburg and Bregenz, but also in three other polling stations in Graz, Linz and Innsbruck. In Turkey, the vote will take place on Sunday. Only then will the results of the foreign elections be announced.
