Social markets have recently had more and more customers due to inflation. But the need in the city is increasing. Even the everything store is now too expensive for some.
Supermarket prices are no longer affordable for many. All that remains is shopping on the social market. “Every week we see a huge increase in customers,” says Andrea Kotesovec, who runs two multi-purpose branches in Favoriten and Ottakring.
It is striking that more and more professionals are joining their company. “I often hear that the money for the rent has been thrown away and there is almost nothing left for the groceries,” says the operator. And there’s another reason why people are queuing: While other wealth markets have raised their prices, here they have refrained from raising them. This makes Allesverwerter about a third cheaper than the competition.
You only pay eight euros for a full shopping basket. But even that was not enough for some. “The demand for free baskets is increasing, it is frightening how great the need is in our city,” says the 57-year-old.
However, she cannot always give away the goods because some major donors have lost their money due to the increase in prices.
