Former Republican MP George Santos, who was thrown from the US Congress for lies and bizarre performances, has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for fraud and identity theft.
His climb to the federal political stage was overshadowed by accusations of fraud and deception from the start. Among other things, he falsified a large part of the Curriculum Vitae, with which he presented himself to the voters in 2022. In the course of the public excitement around his person, more and more lies and strange episodes around Santos came to light.
According to the media reports in court, Santos apologized for the fact that he had abused confidence in him. The former Republican MP was also accused of money laundering and embezzlement of public funds.
The 36-year-old was guilty. Judge Joanna Seybert imposed the sentence of 87 months at a court on Long Island near New York and stated that Santos should start his prison on July 25.
