Around 5 p.m., a number of people gathered on Vienna’s Stephansplatz in front of a sea of lights in solidarity with Ukrainian children. The motto of the meeting was “728 days of war in Ukraine” – Saturday marks the second anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression.
On Thursday at 5 p.m., 5,000 heart-shaped candles were lit on Stephansplatz in Vienna. A sea of lights in solidarity for the children in Ukraine. Saturday marks the second anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Klaus Schwertner, Caritas boss, was also there and described Caritas’ function in the war zone. He was there himself at the end of last year and spoke to those affected. “Currently, 17.6 million people in Ukraine depend on humanitarian aid. “That’s a dramatic number,” Schwertner said.
Ukrainians in the war zone depend on food distributions and hygiene packages every day. At the Caritas distribution points you will mainly find elderly people and families with children. “As Caritas we try to support particularly vulnerable groups,” said the Caritas boss.
Reached four million people
Despite all the drama, there is also good news: “To date, four million people have been reached through the Caritas network alone and thanks to donations from Austria. This help gives a little hope in these difficult days.” Since the outbreak of the war, 500 tons of aid from Caritas Austria have been delivered to Ukraine.
Attacks in Ukraine have increased again in recent days. To date, there have been more than 37,000 air warnings. At best this is psychological terror, but at worst it means destruction, injuries, deaths, pain and suffering, as Schwertner says.
