Passengers criticize – problems with public transport in Vienna: where your journey currently ends

Date:

A derailed rail vehicle caused the U6 in Vienna to be closed in the early hours of the morning. Crowds of people tried to avoid large areas to reach their destination on time. Now passengers are already criticizing the Wiener Linien on social media. Because other public transport systems are also affected by construction work or closures…

“People can’t actually get to work,” complained one user on the “X” platform on Tuesday. “Tram 5, which I’m being referred to, is still a twenty-minute walk away,” said another affected person in despair. Why? On Tuesday night around 2 a.m., a rail vacuum cleaner tipped over between the Josefstädter Straße and Thaliastraße stations. Chaos reigned on public transport until Tuesday afternoon.

The intervals of line 5 are condensed
So for everyone whose destination was between Michelbeuern/AKH and Burggasse, Stadthalle, it was time to stop. Despite the replacement rail service, the Wiener Linien advised a large area. The replacement service ran at intervals of five to seven minutes. The intervals of line 5 were also condensed.

The Lerchenfelder Belt also had to be temporarily closed due to the restoration of the trackbed vacuum. The vehicle – operated by an external company – is a device that sucks up the gravel so that it can be exchanged. The suction arm of the machine is quite heavy, which is why it may have fallen over.

The fire brigade secured the vehicle, which weighs around 20 tonnes with the body, using a crane and several cable winches. The device was then reassembled in cooperation with the Wiener Linien and put on the track. The track vacuum cleaner was towed away from the scene of the accident late in the morning. It was then investigated whether the track had also been damaged in the accident.

Work resumed around lunchtime
However, no special impairments were found. Therefore, activities on the U6 could be resumed in both directions without restrictions.

Line U4 gets new tunnel girders
But it wasn’t just on the U6 route that passengers had to expect delays or take evasive measures; on the U4 line between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring stations, there was no further travel until 2 September. There, the metro is getting new tunnel supports.

Currently multiple section closures
There are also partial route closures on lines 33, 43 and 44. In addition, lines 1 and 62 will be diverted until November due to the redevelopment of the Wiedner Hauptstrasse. The Badner Bahn only runs between Baden and Kliebergasse.

Track construction work on lines 2 and 18
Due to track construction, line 2 will be diverted via the route of lines 5 and 31 between Am Tabor and Höchstädtplatz until 20 July 2024. Line 18 will also only run between Schlachthausgasse U and Westbahnhof SU due to track construction work until 2 August 2024.
