Police detained a man at the scene on Thursday afternoon following the incident, she said. He is suspected of “criminal damage to property and dangerous driving”. There were no injuries, it said.
According to eyewitness accounts and video footage, a silver car had driven slowly down the wide Whitehall Road, which is lined with several government departments, and then apparently turned onto the pavement at the entrance to Downing Street. There the car stopped after hitting the metal gate of the barrier.
“Loud bang”
Police surrounded the driver and immediately evacuated the area. Eyewitness Simon Parry reported that he first heard a “loud bang”. Then he looked and saw many police officers yelling at a man with tasers.
The 44-year-old said sniffer dogs and a bomb squad had also been deployed.
According to British media, Sunak was in Downing Street at the time of the incident, but left his official residence at number 10 shortly afterwards.
Downing Street is located in central London and is home to several government buildings. In addition to the prime minister, the party chairman of the ruling party and the finance minister also live on the street. Access to Downing Street has been closed since 1989, before that it was always open.
