Investigative success for the Styrian police in the fight against document fraud: After a year-long investigation, ten people have now been reported to have traded false passports, driver’s licenses or identity cards.
The investigation began with a “harmless” traffic check by police officers from the Graz-Karlauerstrasse police station: a 22-year-old Croat identified himself with a forged German driver’s license. An initial investigation quickly led officials to another Croatian suspect (26) from Graz, who apparently worked as a middleman.
In close cooperation with the LKA Steiermark, more suspects could be identified. “The suspects also used the forged documents themselves. They always used ‘foreign’ documents during checks to mislead the control authorities,” says head of the investigation team, Johann Klammler. The documents mainly concerned forged passports, identity cards and driver’s licenses. permits from Germany and Slovenia.
Bank fraud
A total of ten people between the ages of 22 and 62 are shown. Some of the suspects live in Graz, the vicinity of Graz and the former Yugoslav states. At least 13 document forgeries can be proven among the main perpetrators (27, 37, 41). Investigators also found some forged documents.
One of the men, a 41-year-old Kosovo Albanian, is also strongly suspected of using a forged document to obtain a loan and defrauding a domestic bank. The damage runs into the tens of thousands of euros. With this document he also obtained an Austrian work permit.
