Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters is not in legal trouble because of his anti-Semitic exits, but because of a stage performance that has looked the same on his tours for years. Due to the appearance in the outfit reminiscent of the SS, the Berlin police are investigating on suspicion of incitement to hatred. Waters dismisses the accusation – and takes the opportunity to present himself as a victim.
“My recent performance in Berlin has led to malicious attacks from those who want to defame and silence me for disagreeing with my political views and moral principles,” the singer said via the broadcast.
“Insincere and politically motivated”
At his concert in Berlin last week, 79-year-old Waters wore a long black leather jacket and a red armband, clothing reminiscent of the SS. “The elements of my performance that have been questioned are clearly a statement against fascism, injustice and bigotry in all their forms,” said Waters. “The attempt to portray these elements as anything else is disingenuous and politically motivated. Portraying a deranged fascist demagogue has been a hallmark of my shows since Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ in 1980.”
Waters has repeatedly attracted attention with anti-Semitic statements and statements blaming the West for the war in Ukraine. He is also accused of being close to the so-called BDS campaign, an anti-Israel boycott initiative. Since then, numerous cities have tried to ban Waters’ concerts, but often failed in court, as recently in Frankfurt am Main.
