MSF rescues 599 migrants in the Mediterranean in one of the largest rescue operations of the year

Date:

The NGO Médecins Sans Frontières has brought survivors to safety in Bari, Italy, after they were given safe haven permission.

the rescue ship ‘Geo Barentsz’ of the NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced this Saturday one of the most numerous saves of the year in the Mediterranean by saving in a single operation 599 passengers of a great ship in distress.

The procedure, which took three hours, began after MSF received a message from Italy’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Center asking for help to rescue the passengers of the ship, which is in danger of capsizing.

The crew of the ‘Geo Barents’ has finished evacuating the survivors, including women and children, to safety and has been authorized a safe haven in Bari (Italy), 40 hours away from the rescue zone, as reported by MSF on your Twitter account.
