Russian airstrikes – There is no end to the nightly barrage of missiles over Kiev

Date:

For the second night in a row, massive Russian airstrikes rocked the Ukrainian capital. Air defenses shot down more than 40 Russian missiles over Kiev. The military administration said it was a combination of missile and drone strikes.

According to its own statements, the Ukrainian army shot down 29 of the 35 drones launched by the Russian army on Monday night. In addition, 37 of the 40 missiles were intercepted, the Air Force said. Russian forces targeted military facilities and critical infrastructure.

This is the 15th Russian airstrike on the city this month and the second night raid in a row. Kiev was already hit by the worst drone attack to date on Sunday evening. Although 52 of the unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down, according to authorities, at least two people were killed by falling parts. On the last Sunday of May, the city traditionally celebrates the day of its official founding 1541 years ago.

Port of Odessa is partially damaged
According to Ukrainian sources, the port of Odessa was partially damaged in a Russian drone strike on Monday evening. “As a result of the impact, fire broke out in the port infrastructure of Odessa,” the Ukrainian army’s Southern Command said. The fire was quickly extinguished. The army left open whether the damage to the port would also endanger grain exports.

Ukraine can only export grain and other foodstuffs through ports in the Odessa region. In July 2022, the United Nations and Turkey negotiated a grain agreement with Ukraine and Russia that was initially valid for 120 days. This month it has been extended again. The deal aims to guarantee the safe export of grain and food from three Ukrainian ports – Odessa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyy – even during the war, thus helping to address the global food crisis. Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world.

Ukraine prepares for counter-offensive
While the shelling from Russia has increased in recent days, Ukraine is probably preparing for the counterattack at the moment. Statements from Kiev indicate that an offensive is imminent. A “trailer” published by the head of the Ukrainian army also agrees.

The country, which has been under attack by Russia for more than 15 months, is relying on Western heavy weapons and ammunition to liberate its occupied territories. The EU countries and the US have always stressed that they will continue to support Ukraine.
