The pain after a fall was apparently so severe that a hiker on Kleiner Sonnstein in Upper Austria lost consciousness. Woman and son set the rescue chain in motion. The injured were rescued via Tau by a rescue helicopter crew and flown to hospital.
The 42-year-old German climbed the Kleiner Sonnstein in Traunkirchen with her husband and son on Sunday. Near the summit, the woman climbed over a rock with her left foot at around 2:15 p.m. and fell. She suffered an extremely painful ankle injury.
Mountain rescuers as first aiders
Due to the severe pain, the 42-year-old immediately became unconscious. Father and son immediately received her and made an emergency call. A mountain rescuer who happened to be present also provided first aid. The mountain rescue service Traunkirchen, the ambulance helicopter “Christophorus 10” and the Alpine Police Gmunden were alerted. The injured person was rescued by the crew of the emergency helicopter with a rope and flown to the Salzkammergut clinic in Gmunden.
