Exotic creepy crawlies caused quite a stir in Baden near Vienna: the poisonous spider was caught in a glass jar and then handed over to the police. It is not yet clear whether the exotic escaped or was left behind. The investigation is ongoing.
This sight makes some people bleed cold: spiders. What is a welcome “pet” to some is a nightmare to others, as in the movie “Arachnophobia”. A poisonous species has also caused a lot of unrest in the vast country recently. Because in Vöslauer Straße in Baden, a tarantula crept quietly along the way. But before the animal could sow fear and terror, a resident tackled it bravely.
The woman quickly caught the exotic “foreign body” in the garden with the help of a jam jar. She then informed the Baden city police, who then escorted the eight-legged friend to the animal shelter in Vösendorf.
Usually harmless to humans
It is currently being determined whether the tarantula was left carelessly or escaped. “Tarantula venom isn’t particularly dangerous to humans unless you’re allergic,” reassures Commander Walter Santin. Despite their size, tarantulas are much less venomous than commonly believed. Deadly to mice or insects, their bite is painful to humans but more harmless than a bee sting.
With a body length of up to twelve centimeters, the tarantula is an impressive representative of its species. The largest species living in Austria is the South Russian tarantula, with a maximum length of 35 millimeters.
