Hungarian prisons are bursting at the seams. That is why Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government wants to ease the situation a bit with its latest attempt to release hundreds of foreign prisoners. But at the same time it is also an attempt to put pressure on the EU to release money to secure the EU’s external borders. Indirectly, Brussels is held very responsible for the mass dismissals of convicted smugglers.
At the end of 2022, there were 19,347 prisoners in Hungarian prisons, the highest number in more than 30 years (see chart below). With this alarming report, the Hungarian Helsinki committee drew attention in December, complaining that even newly built prisons were only a temporary solution, as they would soon be “full again”.
