Alarm in Leoben – four workers involved in an accident with hydrochloric acid

Highest alert level for rescue services Tuesday morning in Leoben in Upper Styria: An incident involving chemicals took place in an industrial facility, four people were injured.

According to the police, a 58-year-old from the Leoben district and a 45-year-old from the Bruck an der Mur district were ordered to pump hydrochloric acid from an industrial installation with a tank truck.

Carelessness as the cause?
Chemical residues may have been pumped into the same tank for reasons not yet elucidated. This resulted in a chemical reaction and formation of irritating fumes. These escaped from the tanker and infected the two men and two other people present (58 and 44 from the Leoben district).

The four injured have been transferred to the LKH Leoben. The 58- and 44-year-olds were released after outpatient treatment. The two employees who filled the tanker are currently being treated.

Those responsible on site have extracted the chemicals, so there is no further danger.
