The hail on Easter Monday evening in the Waldviertel even paralyzed traffic. Because ice creams laid and stacked so that cars even got stuck. But agriculture was sometimes hit: the still loose earth of fresh sowing was particularly sowing, winter rounds were literally chopped.
There was a big alarm in the Waidhofen district on the Thaya in the Waldviertel when a hail shower -again went through the region on Monday and caused violent damage. The layer of ice was up to half a meter high in Großgerharts, who reported “Krone”.
Huge amounts of ice cords and water masses invaded the communities of Waidhofen, Waidhofen-Land, Thaya, Kautzen, Raabs and Dobersberg in residential buildings and caused flooding of cellars and streets. Ice, mud and rubble laid channels, the frozen water also ensured that the steering wheel had stalled on the street with their vehicles. Entire streets turned into furious flows. “The ice layer in Großgerharts was a maximum of half a meter high,” said spokesman Stefan Mayer of the fire brigade, which moved over the district on Monday from 7 pm on Monday.
Valuable earth flushed in trenches
The most violent damage was in the Thaya region, where almost half of the expanded firefighters were deployed. Farmers Secretary Herbert Gutkas emphasizes in an interview with the “Kroon” that the greatest damage had taken place there.
“It was mainly influenced by the fields in which the sowing only recently took place. Because the water masses were simply the loose and valuable land and were flushed in the ditch,” explains the farming officer that fresh set of potatoes were particularly damaged. Now the farmers with the new cultivation come partly in time: after a maximum of 60 millimeters of precipitation, the fields must dry up before they can be driven again.
Winter raps “minced meat”
The winter rap seed, which was already 20 to 30 centimeters high, was literally “chopped” through the hail. The rapeseed has been called up again, but there will be some fields in which no useful harvest could be achieved due to unequal growth. The frozen fruit must be above that. Because it has not been that far yet, the winter grains should have survived the hail relatively well. Most damage is covered by hail insurance.
