The Ukrainian government on Thursday reported massive Russian airstrikes across the country, especially on energy infrastructure. Cruise missiles with cluster munitions are said to have been used. Several nuclear power plants had to be taken offline.
Millions of people were cut off from electricity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had de facto mined several energy facilities through the use of cluster munitions. That and the targeting of civilian infrastructure is “a very despicable escalation.”
Half the capacity paralyzed
According to Ukrainian authorities, the war enemy has already shut down about half of the country’s available generating capacity over the course of the war. The distribution network was damaged and authorities were forced to switch off electricity for a long time. In the latest case, the capital Kiev and the eastern regions of Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk are among those affected. There were also some disruptions in the water supply on Thursday.
Deaths due to drone strikes
The regional capital Rivne switched to distance learning. Explosions were also reported in almost all parts of the country. Two men were killed by a Russian drone in Kharkov, regional governor Oleh Synyehubov said on the Telegram platform. One injured person was reported in two other areas. An air raid siren was in force in Kiev for nine hours until Thursday morning.
Zelensky reiterated his call for Western allies to provide more equipment for Ukrainian air defense. The coming winter months are crucial. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the major attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territories with US missiles (see video above). 17 targets were hit, including military and defense industry facilities.
In eastern Ukraine, Russian forces have reported the capture of another settlement. There are currently repeated reports of rapid Russian advances.
