Thousands of Turks loudly celebrated “their” president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Vienna-Favoriten on Sunday evening. As is well known, this alienates not only the Viennese, but also the politicians are furious. The Ministry of the Interior now reports in a statement that there were 400 reports – and that the Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution is also investigating.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) had already ordered the Office for the Protection of the Constitution to investigate immediately after the Reumannplatz incidents. As reported, the demos include the wolf salute. The two-fingered salute is the hallmark of the so-called Gray Wolves, a banned organization. The occasional one-finger salute (Al Qaeda’s signature) went even better.
As part of the police action, a total of 400 administrative reports were reported to krone.at: the majority, however, according to the provisions of the road traffic regulations – ie due to entering the roadway. It placed four advertisements under the Symbols Act for prohibited hand signals.
“Extensive video material” is currently being reviewed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, so further investigation is likely to follow.
Video: “This is just the beginning!”
In particular, a video from Istanbul posted by a supporter of Erdogan’s AKP is causing a stir: “I am calling from here to the whole world: we are going to the gates of Vienna. We are ready to die for Erdogan. It is still but the beginning!” a young man shouts into the camera “But this is not an isolated case,” confirms sociologist Kenan Güngör – more on Krone+.
The scenes from Reumannplatz also caused a political uproar, recently Green foreign policy spokeswoman Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic commented on the subject: The influence of Erdogan’s AKP and the right-wing extremist MHP in Austria is a problem: “Wolf salutes have no place on Austrian streets.”
There was also dissatisfaction with Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who congratulated Erdogan without making any critical remarks. Van der Bellen was not impressed by the criticism from the federal government. On Wednesday he visited a social market in Vienna.
