Catfish are not uncommon in Austrian waters, but you don’t see such a specimen every day – not even in front of the lens. A “Krone” reader-reporter still managed to videotape an albino catfish in the Old Danube!
Catfish are actually dark in color – brown, black to dark blue to blend in perfectly with their surroundings and camouflage. There are also isolated white, albino specimens – and one of them is making its rounds in Vienna’s old Danube.
“Since 2012 I have been using stand-up paddleboards to view wildlife. You can stalk animals very quietly and inattentive, ”says the reader reporterJake Newbrook from “Krone”. “II live on the old Danube and I am by the water almost every day.”
But he did not expect such a rare encounter: “Catfish are rarely seen in daylight, at night it is better with floodlights. I was totally surprised to see an albino catfish grow so big!” Our reader estimates that the animal is about three to four feet long. Catfish can grow up to five feet long and weigh up to 100 pounds. However, the animals continue to grow throughout their lives, so it is believed that significantly larger specimens can be found in local waters are.
The nature lover on the “Krone”: “I saw the catfish for the first time (on Wednesday, note), but I’ll paddle back to the same spot tomorrow to see if it stays here more often. If he survives, in ten years’ time you can look forward to a ‘Moby Dick’ over two meters high in the Alte Donau!”
