A new face in the “Krone”! From now on, Lena Schilling will deliver a controversial column every Friday. The young Viennese worked for Fridays for Future and the Lobau protest camp. Her plan: “I want to write what moves people.”
She likes the discourse. “Only if we talk to each other and listen to each other again can we shape our society together,” says Lena Schilling. In TV discussions, the 22-year-old Viennese easily defies even the most media-trained counterpart. “Empathetic and gossip” – that’s how Schilling describes himself.

Stopped eating meat at age 12
Raised in Vienna-Meidling, Lena’s mother runs a refugee home, her father works at a bank. She stopped eating meat when she was 12 and went to her first demo when she was 13. Lena studies political science – she will soon complete her studies – and joined the Fridays for Future movement in 2018. In 2021, she is the spokesperson for the protest camp in Lobau, Vienna, and stands out for her pragmatism and candor. An ideal cast as a model activist.
“Forgive my mind in a crazy world”, this quote from Emily Dickinson that she chose for her WhatsApp profile. Especially in this crazy, crisis-ridden world, it is important not to retreat and become disenchanted with politics. She lists “democratic participation, climate justice and solidarity” as important goals.
New colleague of Helga Kromp-Kolb and Rudi Anschober
Also in their columns. “I want to write what moves people”, explains the new colleague of Helga Kromp-Kolb and Rudi Anschober, “to exchange ideas with dissenters, to take the climate problem out of the corner it is in today”.
Schilling is an idol for many young people – and is therefore also entangled in politics. “I don’t intend to become a politician,” she says, “but I don’t want to rule it out forever either.”
