A search for seven missing call center employees in Mexico found 45 plastic bags with human remains. It is not yet known whether they are actually missing, the public prosecutor says on Facebook.
The bags were discovered in a ravine on the edge of a forest in the city of Guadalajara. Body parts of both women and men have been found – how many people they belonged to has yet to be investigated, it said Wednesday evening (local time).
A first plastic bag was found on a 40-meter deep slope north of the metropolis of Guadalajara on Tuesday. Since the area is difficult to access, salvage work would continue in the coming days, authorities said.
Since last week, a search has been underway for two women and five men who worked in a call center in Zapopan, the neighboring city of Guadalajara. It is not yet clear why they disappeared. The public prosecutor’s office announced that the search for the missing persons will continue as long as the identity of the dead in the plastic bags is not clarified.
Nearly 32,000 murders in the previous year
Mexico has been suffering from a wave of violence for years. Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups vie for control of areas of influence, smuggling routes and protection money. They often have ties to corrupt politicians and security forces. Last year, nearly 32,000 murders were recorded in the Latin American country with a population of about 126 million.
