Water Too Shallow – Two Amazon river dolphins rescued from distress

Date:

Two rare Amazon dolphins have been rescued from distress in Colombia. As the Colombian Navy announced Monday (local time), both animals were trapped in dangerously shallow water. So the rescued animals of the endangered marine mammal species were a mother and her offspring.

The rescue operation took place in the Meta River in the east of the country near the border with Venezuela. Experts removed the mother animal weighing about 140 kilograms and the calf weighing about 35 kilograms from the river and released them into deeper water after research, Erika Gómez of the environmental organization Fundación Omacha told AFP news agency.

Military and naval security forces as well as environmental authorities and animal welfare organizations were involved in the action.

Amazon river dolphins, also known as “pink river dolphins”, live mainly in the Amazon and Orinoco river systems of South America. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the species as critically endangered as of 2018.
