Accident of an 84-year-old – Weed flames in the garden backfired

Date:

On the evening of June 1, there was an alarm for six fire brigades in Eisgarn in the district of Gmünd (Lower Austria). Florianis – still in private equipment – saw the fire break out and rushed to the rescue. They kept the fire under control as the comrades approached with the “proper extinguishers” and then quickly extinguished the fire.

An 84-year-old woman who did not use weed killers in her garden in Eisgarn in the Gmünd district behaved exemplary, but burned the unwanted greenery. Unfortunately, the shot backfired violently, as the “thermal destruction” set off a major alarm for six fire departments on the city’s main street.

24-hour fire service
During the work, the pensioner set fire to 15 plants in her thuja hedge. Ice Garn volunteers witnessed the outbreak of the fire with their own eyes. Among them was a farmer mowing his pasture on the other side of the main road. De Floriani immediately stopped his work and drove to the home of the 84-year-old. With a garden hose and his comrades, he held the flames at bay until the fire brigades from Eisgarn and Litschau arrived with real extinguishers and quickly brought the fire under control. Not least due to the quick intervention of the members, worse things were prevented, as Commander Christoph Steiner also knows: “It was possible to prevent it from spreading to the adjacent garden house, it was only slightly scorched and can be used further. ” he says.

Bad ending averted
In any case, it could have been worse – and probably accompanied by a high number of fire reports. In addition to the residential buildings, there is a smaller carpentry shop nearby.
