For more than a decade, the army transported food for soldiers from Wiener Neustadt across the country – millions of miles away. “This is neither climate-friendly nor self-sufficient,” criticizes the FPÖ. There has long been a lack of understanding about the conversion at the Allentsteig military training area in the Waldviertel region. But even with the buzzword self-sufficiency one could be much further there, it is said. . .
Between 2012 and 2021, the soldiers’ food traveled more than 2.5 million kilometers from the “regional kitchen” in Wiener Neustadt to 22 “rounding kitchens” in barracks in Lower Austria and northern Burgenland. Many parliamentary inquiries followed about the army kitchen and the location of self-sufficiency of barracks and thus safety in the event of a power failure. “In times of climate protection and high fuel costs, it cannot be that the barracks are not cooked regionally again,” demands FPÖ national councilor Alois Kainz – also for the military training area Allentsteig (TÜPL).
