In England, a 72-year-old woman was attacked and killed by a dog. The dog owners, a 52-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman, were arrested on suspicion of possessing a banned attack dog and a dog that is no longer under control, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place in Bedworth near Coventry on Friday. The arrested woman was taken to hospital with injuries caused by the dog. These are not life-threatening, it said.
It is not clear what breed the animal belonged to
The dog has been recovered and taken to an animal shelter. What happened to him is still unclear. The police also did not reveal what breed it was – only that the animal belonged to a banned attack dog breed. The Dangerous Dog Act of 1991 prohibits the breeding and keeping of American Pitpull Terriers, Tosa Inus, Dogo Argentinos and Fila Brazileiros and mixed breeds of this breed in Great Britain.
“This was a tragic isolated incident and a full investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances,” said Warwickshire Police spokesman Sutherland Lane. Fortunately, these types of dog attacks are a rarity, he stressed. Witnesses to the incident were asked to contact police.
Always incidents
However, incidents involving dogs in which people are injured or even killed still occur in Britain. A seven-year-old boy and two men were attacked and injured by a German Shepherd in London on Wednesday. The mother of a 10-year-old who was bitten to death by a dog in 2021 is now publicly campaigning for stricter dog ownership laws in the country.
According to the PA news agency, 15 people have been killed by dogs in Britain since the boy’s death in November 2021. In the past year alone, nearly 22,000 people were injured by dogs.
