Strong action – Brazil wants to halt deforestation in the Amazon region

Date:

The Brazilian government now wants to end deforestation in the Amazon by cracking down on violations of the anti-deforestation strategy. “I am committed to resuming Brazil’s global leadership in combating climate change and controlling deforestation,” President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Monday.

In addition to increased supervision and penalties for illegal logging, mining and fishing, Lula also relies on a package of measures to build a green economy, as he explained at the event where the action plan was presented. This includes the certification of forest products, technical assistance to producers, provision of infrastructure, energy and internet connections and the promotion of ecotourism.

Damaged forests must be able to recover
In particular, the action plan foresees an increased use of intelligence from the secret service and satellite images to detect criminal activities. The goal is to put an end to illegal loggers and ranchers by introducing a rural registry to monitor forest management and cross-check the data with the financial system and satellite imagery. The long-term goal: damaged forests must be allowed to regenerate and native vegetation must be encouraged.

There are also plans to set up a tracking system for wood, livestock and other agricultural products from the Amazon region. Importing countries are increasingly demanding proof that these products do not come from deforested areas.

In 2021, Brazil under former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro signed a deal with more than 140 countries to end the exploitation of the rainforest by 2030. On taking office on 1 January, left-wing President Lula declared this to be the central aim of his environmental policy.
