The development of this project is being carried out by a consortium of companies, including CAF from Goierritarra, and has a budget of 14 million.
He FCH2Rail projectwho runs the beasaindarra company CAF and in which one develops hydrogen powered train, the test phase has started on the Canfranc-Zaragoza line. the demonstration train successfully reached Canfranc stationaccording to the Goierritarra-based company, this is a remarkable milestone, as this line is “particularly demanding due to its steep and elevated gradients, which pose a major challenge to the new power generation systems”.
CAF explained that the train ran in both electric mode (in the electrified area) and hybrid mode, combining the energy from hydrogen cells and batteries (in non-electrified sections).
After this first run the test phase is being extended to other lines train stations in Aragon, Madrid and Galicia, where the new technology will be tested under different power and energy demand conditions, simulating different commercial services.
The project started at the beginning of 2021 and is expected to end at the end of 2024. It has a budget of €14 million and it is carried out by a consortium of companies comprising CAF, DLR, Toyota, Renfe, Adif, CNH2, IP and Stemmann-Technik.
The initiative is based on a current Renfe commuter unit, in which CAF has installed a new solution for generating electrical energy from the hybridization of energy from hydrogen cells and batteries, in turn integrating it with the propulsion system already in the car.
