Right-wing Rome no longer supports the annual LGBT parade. She justified this by saying that the organizers demanded public surrogacy. This is illegal in Italy.
In the neighboring country, surrogacy is punishable by imprisonment from three months to two years and fines ranging from 600,000 euros to one million euros. In the future, surrogacy abroad will also be punished, according to a new bill. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni describes herself as a fighter against “gender ideology” and the “LGBT lobby”. Sometimes the expression LGBTQIA+ is also used, here queer, intersex and asexual persons are explicitly added.
Pressure from the Catholic-Conservative lobby?
June is Pride Month, an annual celebration of sexual diversity and identities and related events. Another parade is planned in Rome this Saturday, organized by gay associations, among others. The government of the Lazio region has withdrawn its support this time. The argument is that the organizers would publicly promote surrogacy.
A spokesman for the parade said the right-wing government gave in to pressure from the conservative Catholic lobby. They actually welcomed the move, saying they would “continue monitoring the regional government”. The associations are also against rainbow families, same-sex marriage and abortions, among other things. They are also aligned with the Prime Minister of Italy. Meloni’s government had instructed mayors not to register children of same-sex parents.
Until 2016, Italy was the last country in Western Europe to not legally recognize same-sex partnerships. However, the adoption right for homosexuals was excluded from the law under pressure from Catholic parties and organisations. In the past, Italian courts had repeatedly allowed the adoption of children by the partner.
