Heavy thunderstorms again passed over Austria on Tuesday evening. In some districts of Vienna, it rained more than 20 millimeters in an hour. In Burgenland, the fire brigade even had to turn out 160 times.
The Florianis mainly pumped out flooded cellars. As of 9 p.m., 160 missions in 30 communities were counted, the state security center reports. The districts of Oberwart, Neusiedl am See, Weiden and Parndorf were affected.
No action was needed at the Nova Rock festival site in Nickelsdorf. The music festival starts on Wednesday. 50,000 fans are expected, who will at least have to find improved infrastructure after last year’s rain. For example, lawns were renewed to prevent a situation like 2022. At that time, the festival was about to be canceled on the first day due to weather.
The first images of the yard in the rain are currently being shared on social media (see tweet above). The federal capital and Lower Austria were also hit by the thunderstorms on Tuesday evening. According to the storm center, the core was in the Schwechat area and brought heavy rainfall. In some districts of Vienna, more than 20 millimeters of rain fell within an hour.
Photos were also posted of a thunderstorm between Schwechat and Bruck an der Leitha. One shows dark clouds with a lush, green meadow in the foreground.
Basement under water in Wels
It rained heavily in some parts of Austria on Monday. In Wels (Upper Austria), the fire brigade had to be deployed 60 times on Tuesday between 7.45 pm and 3 am. Several basements of companies flooded over large surfaces. In one company even light metal waste was burning and this fire was fought with quartz sand and glass granulate.
A relaxation is not in sight for the time being
According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center, the weather will remain unsettled. On Wednesday, the clouds will continue to dominate in the east and it may rain from the early morning. Later there will also be showers and thunderstorms in the south. “Locally, the thunderstorms can cause large amounts of rain in a short time and therefore also small-scale flooding,” said Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at Austria’s Severe Weather Center.
But the sun often shines from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria. With 20 to 28 degrees it will be a bit warmer.
