Now it’s official: Former US Vice President Mike Pence has publicly announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. With the application, Pence also challenges his former boss Donald Trump, who wants to participate again after his defeat in 2020.
“I am making an announcement today before God and my family that I am running for President of the United States,” he said in a video posted to Twitter on Wednesday. The 64-year-old had already submitted the necessary documents to the Federal Election Commission on Monday.
Pence is also challenging his former boss Trump. Pence was his deputy from 2017 to 2021. The two have a rocky relationship — and a mixed past together
With his announcement, Pence also expands the field of Republican aspirants. Most prominent of these, besides Trump, are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. More will probably follow.
The presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024. An internal party primary will decide who will eventually become the official candidate.
