A couple’s vacation ended on Saturday evening with a serious car accident on the A1 Westautobahn near Eugendorf. The woman had to be freed from the wreckage.
The 57-year-old driver drove his car from the right lane at 6:30 p.m., hit an information board and crashed into a concrete guardrail. The impact sent the car catapulted 90 feet (27 m) into a ditch and landed on its roof. The driver and his 59-year-old wife were injured, Salzburg police reported.
The woman had to be freed from the car by the volunteer fire brigade Hallwang and Eugendorf. The driver was able to exit the vehicle under his own power.
The passenger was stabilized at the scene of the accident and flown by ambulance helicopter to Salzburg University Hospital. Her husband was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Five injured in other accidents
Traffic accidents involving young motorists also occurred in Saalfelden and St. Johann, with five young people injured. In Saalfelden, an 18-year-old driver lost control of her car on a right turn and crashed into two parked vehicles. She and her two passengers, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, were injured, Salzburg police reported. All three were taken by ambulance to the Tauern clinic in Zell am See.
In St. Johann, a 19-year-old from Altenmarkt also lost control of his vehicle and went off the road. The car remained on the roof. He and his 19-year-old passenger from Abtenau were able to free themselves from the accident car and alert the emergency services. Both suffered only minor injuries and were taken to hospital for a check-up. A breathalyzer test was negative.
