But not dramatically: by 2023 the trains will have become slightly less punctual

Date:

Last year the local trains were slightly less punctual than the year before. The Agency for Passengers and Passenger Rights (apf) announced that punctuality in rail traffic continues to be “maintained at a high level”. The Westbahn did slightly better in the statistics than the ÖBB.

“Despite challenging conditions, extreme weather, construction work and delayed train transfers, punctuality has not deteriorated significantly,” said apf. For the Austrian Climate Ticket, punctuality over the year was 94.6 percent, but in July, August, September and December it was below the legally established value.

Refund depends on the type of annual card
The required level of punctuality varies depending on the annual ticket, explained apf. For the regional climate maps or annual route maps of the seven transport associations, a monthly punctuality of at least 95 percent applies to trains in regional transport. For the climate ticket, this is at least 93 percent for all regional and long-distance trains. To assert your claim, register for the refund at www.klimaticket.at or with ÖBB-Personenverkehr.

According to the APF report, Westbahn was the most punctual company in long-distance transport, but recorded a decrease from 88 to 83.7 percent compared to the previous year. “The main reason for this was the extension of the route network to Innsbruck and Bregenz and the resulting delayed train transfers from abroad,” the agency said. The ÖBB-Personenverkehr company achieved a punctuality rate of 80.3 percent (2022: 81.4 percent).

Regiojet is the least punctual train company
The decline is due to a lack of vehicles, weather conditions such as the onset of winter with heavy snowfall in December, delayed train transfers from neighboring countries and construction sites, for example in the “German corner”. The Regiojet, which runs between Prague, Vienna and Budapest, recorded a punctuality of 64.4 percent in Austria, making it the least punctual railway company in long-distance transport (2022: 53.7 percent).

Train is first of five minutes and 30 seconds late
In all ÖBB passenger transport, train punctuality, which is relevant for passenger compensation, was 94.2 percent. During the assessment, a train is considered to be on time if it is delayed by a maximum of five minutes and 29 seconds. Trains delayed by five minutes and thirty seconds or more, train cancellations and unscheduled track replacement services are considered non-punctual.

Trains in the West are the most punctual
Details from the federal states: The trains in Vorarlberg were again the most punctual in 2023 (96.6 percent). High values were also achieved in Tyrol (95.9 percent) and Carinthia (95.8 percent). Upper Austria ranked last (92.7 percent in local transport by ÖBB passenger transport). And very locally: on the Leobersdorf – Weißenbach-Neuhaus route in Lower Austria, the trains reached their stations with a punctuality of 98.8 percent, making it the highest punctuality in Austria. The section in the Mühlviertel from Pregarten to Horní Dvoriste on the Summerauerbahn had the lowest value at 80.2 percent.

The suburban line is the most punctual in Vienna
There are four routes within Vienna that registered 2.5 million arrivals. The suburban Handelskai-Hütteldorf line was the most punctual route at 98.3 percent, followed by the short route between Vienna Main Station and Meidling. The main express train route between Vienna Meidling and Vienna Floridsdorf could not achieve values above 95 percent in any month. In the case of ÖBB passenger transport, delays in urban transport and in the core zones of transport associations are legally excluded from delay compensation.

In these cases a refund will be made
APF states the following about the compensation for annual pass holders: Individual delayed trips are not compensated. Instead, a legally established level of punctuality applies, and if this level is not achieved within a valid month, a lump sum compensation is paid. This is paid after the annual pass has expired. Those affected are entitled to a claim of ten percent of the compensation basis in one month, i.e. the ticket price for the railway company minus the price shares for transport with regular motor vehicles (buses) or urban transport. Amounts under four euros can be excluded from a payout (minimum limit).
