Horrific images have surfaced again of poor animal husbandry on a farm. The circumstances have little to do with the “farm idyll” that the company advertises to the outside world. The “Association Against Animal Factories” (VGT) filed a complaint.
In the Lower Austrian district of Krems-Land there is a normal-looking stable building in the middle of the village. But a closer look reveals a picture of horror: emaciated pigs, illegally tied goats and calves, and cattle chained in a pool of excrement and urine. Few know the conditions under which the animals have to live here.
Although there would be enough greenery around, the animals are in dirty pens or tied up. The situation is especially dramatic with the pigs: several mother animals look very thin, they clearly receive too little or only unsuitable feed. There has been no mucking out here for a long time, the existing straw is massively covered with excrement – some pigs have no litter at all and stand in their own dirt.
Beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside
Most of the 30 or so cattle stand next to each other in the stable, chained up briefly, the rest on heaps of excrement with no dry place to lie. However, signs from various breeding associations proudly hang on the stable fence, which want to give the impression of species-specific livestock farming. But behind the barn door, calves are tied illegally, one of them extremely short.
Another calf has to be isolated from the others in a so-called “calf igloo” in an extremely small space. Elsewhere, a calf stands in a too small and dark corner of the stable – grievances that are hidden behind the facade of the “farm of trust”.
Permanent tethering
Some of the chained cattle have a wall in front of them all day – and their chains barely allow a step. While some goats roam freely in the pen, most are chained, which is clearly prohibited by law. In another area, a number of goats are crammed into a small bay.
Sold as organic milk
It is not known whether milk is processed for sale in the existing milk room, but a sign of organic goat’s milk suggests that. In any case, the hygienic conditions are inadequate.
David Richter of the VGT: “It is pathetic to keep the animals in such conditions. They are at the farmer’s mercy and apparently no one has yet come to the rescue. Based on the video and photo recordings sent to us, we were able to send a report to the responsible district authority a few days ago. We hope that the animals will be helped quickly and that at least a legal condition will be imposed, even if it is far from species-appropriate husbandry.”
