The Kremlin mourns the death of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died on Monday at the age of 86. “For me, Silvio was a dear person, a true friend,” Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote in his condolence telegram to Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Monday.
He has always admired Berlusconi’s foresight and balanced decisions and was infected by Berlusconi’s humor and joie de vivre during their meetings. Berlusconi’s death was an “irreplaceable loss and a deep misfortune,” it said.
Contact also after Russian invasion
The former Italian prime minister was considered a close friend of Putin. The 86-year-old did not break contact with Moscow, even after the outbreak of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine.
Elsewhere, condolences were expressed much more reservedly. “We extend our condolences to the family and the Italian people for the passing of Berlusconi,” European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said during his daily briefing.
“An atypical politician”
French Rassemblement National party leader Marine Le Pen wrote that Berlusconi had “profoundly shaped the political life of Italy”. “He was an atypical politician with an extraordinary life,” said Le Pen.
