Rising permafrost was probably the cause of the massive landslide Sunday afternoon in the area of the almost 3400 meter high Flühhorn in Tyrol’s Silvretta area. Geologists came to this conclusion on Monday after a reconnaissance flight by helicopter. More than 100,000 cubic meters of material are believed to have broken down. However, the exact size is still unclear.
The demolition point in the high mountains is about nine kilometers south of Galtür (Landeck district) as the crow flies. According to the initial findings of state geology as a result of the reconnaissance flight, at least more than 100,000 cubic meters of material had broken off at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, the state of Tyrol said early Monday afternoon.
Measurements must provide information
An exact indication of the amount of demolition material is not yet possible. “Measurements are then initiated for this purpose, which can be used to provide detailed information. The affected path is already largely closed from the Jamtalhütte. Based on the knowledge gained, other possible closures or possible relocations will be considered.”
Rising permafrost as the cause
State geology experts pinpoint the cause of the massive rock fall in the rising high mountain permafrost. “During the reconnaissance flight, exposed pieces of ice were found. Further rock falls in this high alpine area cannot be ruled out.
Mountain rescuers filmed a landslide
The rock fall and the mudslide it caused have reached a length of about two kilometers. A mountain rescuer who was on a mountain bike with his partner in the Jamtalhütte area filmed the landslide.
The police helicopter flew directly over the area. Fortunately, the crew could not see any climbers. This is probably also because the popular Jamtalhütte is still closed. No one would have been on the way from the Heidelberger Hütte to the Flüchthorn before the demolition.
