Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca announced his resignation three weeks later. His successor will be the head of the Post-Communists (PSD), Marcel Ciolacu. The cabinet change was already laid down in the coalition agreement of 2021.
Ciuca should have resigned at the end of May, but a weeks-long strike by teaching staff thwarted the coalition’s plans. Subsequently, President Klaus Johannis must now appoint a minister from the outgoing cabinet as acting head of government and then award the government contract. The head of the Post-Communists (PSD) is already committed to this – Marcel Ciolacu. It is highly unlikely that Johannis would appoint another person from the PSD party to form the government.
A new government will take office at the end of this week
The new government led by Ciolacu should be in office by the end of this week if possible. It is currently unclear whether the current coalition – PSD, PNL and Hungarian Association (UDMR) – will continue or continue without the Hungarian Association. The latter repeatedly thwarted divisional negotiations, so PSD boss Ciolacu is considering ruling without the junior partner. The coalition would still have the majority. UDMR chief Kelemen Hunor described this scenario as “quite possible” on Sunday evening.
