If things go according to Team Carinthia boss Gerhard Köfer’s plans, the Federal Council has had its day. For the politician, the abolition of the Bundesrat is a “considerable step”. The provincial governors should be given more powers for this.
“The Bundesrat, ie the state chamber, is outdated, far too expensive and politically of minor importance,” Gerhard Köfer, boss of Team Carinthia, said in a broadcast on Monday. For the Carinthian politician, the Bundesrat does not act in the interests of the federal states, but in the interests of the parties. Therefore, there must be a change in the political system in Austria.
Köfer already has concrete plans
Instead of the Bundesrat, the Conference of the Governors of the Länder should be given more real political power. “The past decades have shown that the conference of state governors ensures that the interests of the states are effectively represented and that they work in a more targeted way than the Federal Council, which is actually responsible for this,” says Köfer, who sees opportunities for millions of dollars in savings from the Bundesrat to replace.
Abolish live broadcasts
If Team Kärnten has plans, the live broadcast of Federal Council meetings on ORF will also be out of date: “I wonder on behalf of many citizens who would miss something like this on state television.”
Sharp criticism of Köfer’s plans came from the FPÖ, more specifically from FP Federal Councilor Isabella Theuermann: “Gerhard Köfer has nothing to do with federal politics. So I wonder why he has something to say about it.”
