“Mixed feelings” – Ukrainian refugee won half a million euros

Date:

A young refugee from Ukraine won half a million euros in Belgium with a scratch card. The player bought his lottery ticket for five euros at a gas station, a spokesman for the national lottery company reported on Monday. Like all winners of amounts above 100,000 euros, he was invited to the lottery headquarters in Brussels for the presentation.

“He had very mixed feelings,” says Lotto spokesperson Joke Vermoere. “His thoughts were clear in Ukraine, and in these times it is difficult to be happy with everything that is happening in his country.” At the same time, the young man was happy with his victory and “full of hope”.

He wants to use the money “to do something for his compatriots and rebuild his country”. But first he plans a party for the Belgian family and friends who would have helped him find work and integrate after he fled to Belgium.
